The question

Some people believe universities should focus on academic subjects, while others think practical skills are more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The sample answer

There is disagreement about whether universities should concentrate on academic knowledge or prepare students more directly for practical work. Both purposes are important, but I believe that theoretical understanding should remain the foundation of a degree, with practical activities helping students learn how to use it.

Those who favour academic study argue that universities should offer more than training for a first job. A student who understands the principles behind a subject is better placed to respond when current techniques become outdated. In engineering, for instance, learning why a structure carries a load is more transferable than memorising the steps in one design program. Academic work also encourages students to question assumptions and evaluate evidence. These habits can remain useful throughout a career, even when a graduate changes employer or moves into a different field.

Supporters of practical education, however, point out that knowing a principle is not the same as applying it under real conditions. A business student may understand a budgeting method but struggle to explain a recommendation to a client. Projects, placements and laboratory tasks allow students to practise these skills and discover gaps in their understanding. They can also make the transition into employment less difficult. This is especially valuable for students who have little opportunity to gain relevant experience outside their studies and would otherwise graduate with few examples of completed work.

In my view, these aims are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. Universities should build courses around rigorous academic content and then ask students to use that knowledge in realistic assignments. This approach preserves the lasting value of a degree while giving graduates a stronger starting point in the workplace.

Vocabulary in context

Each phrase appears in the answer above. Learn how it works, not just a replacement word.

question assumptions
Examine whether accepted starting beliefs are justified.

Question is a verb here; it means examine critically, not simply ask a question.

The phrase is often used with not or rather than when two choices can coexist.

The change from studying to working.

Transition into names the new stage; transition from names the previous stage.
