The question

In many countries, working from home is becoming increasingly common. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

The sample answer

Working from home has become an ordinary arrangement for many employees whose jobs can be performed online. Although this shift can make collaboration more difficult, I believe its benefits generally outweigh its drawbacks, provided that employers deliberately protect opportunities for colleagues to work together.

The most immediate advantage is the time saved by avoiding a daily commute. An employee who previously spent an hour travelling in each direction can use part of that time for exercise, family responsibilities or rest. This does not automatically increase productivity, but it can make a demanding job more sustainable. Remote arrangements can also widen access to employment. For example, a skilled applicant who lives far from a major city may be able to join a company without paying for an expensive move. In this way, flexibility can benefit both workers and businesses that need to recruit them.

The main disadvantage is the loss of easy, informal communication. A new employee may hesitate to arrange a video meeting for a small question that would take seconds to ask in an office. If this happens repeatedly, mistakes can remain unnoticed and newcomers may feel isolated. However, these problems are not unavoidable. Scheduled mentoring sessions, clear written guidance and occasional meetings in person can preserve much of the support that an office provides. Such measures require effort, but they do not require everyone to travel to the same building every day.

Overall, the reduction in commuting and the broader access to jobs are substantial advantages. While remote work needs thoughtful management, its communication problems can often be reduced without giving up the flexibility that makes it valuable.
