The question
Some employers allow staff to complete the same weekly working hours over four longer days instead of five shorter days. Do the advantages of this arrangement outweigh the disadvantages?
The sample answer
Completing the same weekly hours over four long days can give employees a full additional day away from work and remove one commute. These are meaningful benefits, but the longer shifts can create fatigue and conflict with care responsibilities. I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for suitable jobs when participation is voluntary and service coverage is planned.
A whole weekday free is more useful for some tasks than small reductions spread across five evenings. Employees may arrange medical appointments, study or care for relatives without taking leave. One fewer journey also saves time and transport cost, particularly for workers travelling a long distance. Employers may benefit if the arrangement makes vacancies easier to fill or gives teams a quieter day for concentrated work. The improvement does not come from working fewer hours, however. It depends on whether employees value the different distribution and can recover adequately between longer days.
Ten-hour shifts can be tiring, especially in roles requiring continuous attention, physical effort or difficult customers. The last hours of a long day may be less productive and could increase mistakes. Parents may also find that childcare designed around ordinary office hours does not cover earlier starts or later finishes. Businesses that need five- or seven-day availability cannot simply close whenever staff take their extra day. These drawbacks can be reduced through opt-in trials, staggered team days, protected breaks and limits for safety-critical work, but the arrangement should not be imposed where coverage or health evidence shows it is unsuitable.
In conclusion, a compressed week can provide valuable usable time and reduce commuting without cutting total hours. Its benefits are strongest in roles that can redistribute coverage and for employees who choose the longer days. Flexible trials are therefore preferable to treating four days as a universal improvement for every worker and workplace.
Vocabulary in context
Each phrase appears in the answer above. Learn how it works, not just a replacement word.

The phrase describes one way to preserve coverage rather than closing the whole organisation.
- safety-critical work
- Work in which reduced attention or an error can create serious harm.
