Lesson 4 of 8 · Part 3

Develop an abstract Part 3 response

Move from a clear position to a mechanism, example and qualification in IELTS Speaking Part 3.

1

State a position

Part 3 questions often ask about causes, changes or judgements. Give a clear answer first, even if your position includes conditions or exceptions.

2

Explain the mechanism

Do not stop at 'because it is better'. Explain how one factor produces an effect. A mechanism turns a general claim into reasoning.

3

Qualify rather than contradict

Acknowledge a relevant exception and show how it affects your main view. Qualification adds precision; changing sides without explanation creates confusion.

Next-attempt checklist

  • Answer the exact question.
  • Explain how or why.
  • Add only a relevant qualification.
