IELTS writing timer: practise inside the real time limits

Keeping to time is a skill you can practise. Use the full 60-minute countdown with a reminder at 20 minutes, or time one task on its own. Write on paper or in any editor while it runs.

Practice

60:00

The countdown keeps going if you switch tabs or reload this page, so you can write on paper or in another window.

What each timer does

OptionReminders (time left)
Full Writing test (60 minutes)
  • 40:00: 20 minutes gone: finish Task 1 now and move on to Task 2.
  • 05:00: 5 minutes left: finish your conclusion and check your answer.
Task 1 only (20 minutes)
  • 03:00: 3 minutes left: check your overview and your figures.
Task 2 only (40 minutes)
  • 35:00: 5 minutes gone: your plan should be ready. Start writing.
  • 05:00: 5 minutes left: finish your conclusion and check your answer.

The 20-minute reminder in the full test is a suggestion from the official timing advice, not a rule: the test itself does not stop you at 20 minutes.

How to practise with the timer

  1. Choose a question first, from the practice library or the Task 2 topics, so reading it is part of the timed practice.
  2. Start the timer and plan briefly before you write. The essay planner shows a paragraph structure for each Task 2 type.
  3. Keep going when a reminder appears. In the full test, move on to Task 2 at the 20-minute reminder even if Task 1 is not perfect.
  4. Stop when time is up and count your words with the word counter. Then review: did you answer every part?

Questions about IELTS Writing timing

How long is the IELTS Writing test?

60 minutes for both tasks. The official format advises spending no more than 20 minutes on Task 1 and no more than 40 minutes on Task 2.

Can I use this timer for General Training Writing?

Yes. Academic and General Training Writing both last 60 minutes, with the same advice to spend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.

Does the timer keep running if I change tab?

Yes. It counts down to a fixed end time, so it stays correct if you switch tabs, lock your phone or reload the page.

Does the timer need an internet connection?

No. Once the page has loaded, the timer runs in your browser without a connection.
