The question
Some university students spend part of their free time volunteering in the local community. What benefits can this bring to students? How can universities encourage more students to take part?
The sample answer
Volunteering can connect university study with needs outside the campus. It may give students practical experience, stronger communication skills and a clearer understanding of their community. Universities can encourage participation by creating structured partnerships, offering vetted opportunities and making the time commitment realistic alongside academic work.
The main benefit is the chance to apply knowledge in an unfamiliar setting. A computing student helping a charity organise its records must listen to non-specialists, identify the actual problem and explain a solution in plain language. This practical experience tests abilities that a classroom exercise may not reveal. Volunteering can also introduce students to people whose ages, occupations or circumstances differ from their own. Regular contact may challenge simple assumptions about a local issue and improve the student's confidence in working with others. Finally, a sustained role can help someone decide whether a field genuinely interests them before they choose further training or a career, although service should not be treated merely as a line on a résumé.
Universities should reduce uncertainty rather than pressuring students to participate. A central service could publish vetted opportunities with clear duties, supervision arrangements, travel information and expected weekly hours. Structured partnerships with local organisations would allow staff to resolve problems and prevent students from being placed in roles without useful support. Short introductory sessions could help first-time volunteers choose appropriately, while flexible options during quieter parts of the academic year would suit those with jobs or caring responsibilities. Recognition through a reflective workshop or transcript note may be appropriate, but compulsory hours could turn community work into another task to complete as quickly as possible.
Overall, volunteering can build practical experience, communication and informed career choices when the role involves genuine responsibility. Universities are best placed to encourage it by making reliable opportunities easier to find and fit around study, while preserving students' choice and the needs of partner organisations.
Vocabulary in context
Each phrase appears in the answer above. Learn how it works, not just a replacement word.
- practical experience
- Knowledge or ability gained by doing real tasks rather than only studying theory.
Name the task or setting that provides the experience so the claim can be developed.
- structured partnerships
- Continuing cooperative arrangements with defined roles and support.
The phrase suggests more than an informal list of organisations; explain what structure is provided.
- vetted opportunities
- Roles checked in advance for suitability, reliability or safety.
Vetted describes a completed checking process and should not imply a guarantee that no problem can occur.
