Academic Task 2 · Opinion / agree or disagree

Green roofs on university buildings

An original IELTS practice question with a planning route and a sample answer to learn from.

Aim for at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. Suggested practice level: advanced, not a predicted band.

Your writing task

Universities should be required to include planted green roofs on all suitable new buildings, even if this increases construction costs. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

How to approach this question

State how far you agree, then develop reasons that support the same position throughout.

Opinion essays: choose a position and develop your reasons →

Environment essays: connect actions, effects and policy limits →

Supporting view: a planted roof can slow rainwater runoff and add insulation where a building and climate are suitable. Explain why a design requirement should include technical assessment rather than claiming every roof can carry plants.

Cost qualification: installation and long-term maintenance have an upfront cost, but universities can publish suitability exceptions and compare whole-life performance. Decide whether those safeguards justify a general requirement.

These are possible directions, not required opinions or facts to memorise. Develop your own response and check every claim against the task.

A possible plan

  1. Introduction: state how far you agree and keep that position consistent.
  2. Body 1: develop your strongest reason with an explanation and a specific example.
  3. Body 2: develop another reason, or evaluate a counterargument without losing your position.
  4. Conclusion: answer the question again using the reasoning you have developed.

Vocabulary you can use precisely

Choose language that fits your meaning. You do not need to include every phrase.

building envelope
The roof, walls and other parts separating a building's interior from outside conditions.
A green roof can form a useful part of the building envelope when its structure is suitable.
long-term maintenance
Inspection and care required over an extended period.
The design budget should include long-term maintenance rather than only the installation price.
