IELTS writing correction: AI checker or a human examiner?

Both can help, and they do different jobs. An AI checker gives you a quick estimate and feedback on every draft. A human examiner judges strong writing more reliably and can tell you what matters most, but costs more per essay and takes longer.

Disclosure: we make an AI checker and do not offer human marking. Facts about correction services link to the pages we read.

When a human examiner is worth paying for

  • Your target is 7.5 or higher and AI estimates sit around 7. That is where our own checker is least reliable.
  • Your test is close and you want one careful judgement on a full response.
  • Your estimates jump around between similar essays, or you disagree with the feedback and cannot see why.
  • You want someone to judge tone in a General Training letter for a particular reader and situation.

When an AI checker is enough

  • Regular practice: checking every essay is affordable only with AI.
  • Checking that you covered every part of the question before worrying about vocabulary.
  • Seeing whether a rewrite actually improved the weakest criterion.
  • Building the habit of writing within 20 and 40 minutes, then reviewing straight away.

A plan that uses both

  1. Write two or three practice responses a week and check each one with AI.
  2. Rewrite one paragraph per response and check whether the weakest criterion improved.
  3. Every few weeks, or before your test, pay for one human evaluation of your best recent full response.
  4. Use the examiner's comments to choose what to practise next, then go back to AI checks for the volume.

Start with an original question from the practice library or a full IELTS Writing mock test.

What to check before paying for correction

  • Who marks it: a current or former IELTS examiner, or a teacher? IELTS Online Tests, for example, says its evaluations are by current or very experienced former examiners.
  • What the price covers: one task or both, and whether a rewrite is included.
  • Turnaround: working days only, or weekends too.
  • Feedback format: a band for each of the four criteria with reasons, rather than a list of corrected words.
  • Privacy: what happens to your essay after it is marked.

Exam passes

Practise until test day.

Pay once for everything in Pro, for as long as you need before your test. A pass never renews and nothing more is charged. Buying another pass adds its days after the current one ends.

Which should I choose? Pro suits regular practice and renews monthly until you cancel. A pass suits a fixed test date: you pay once and it never renews.

A pass starts straight away, so the usual 14-day cancellation right does not apply. It never renews.

Retaking Writing?

If Writing held your band back, practise with a pass until your retake: check every essay against the four criteria, fix one weakness at a time and see each estimate change. The bands are estimates, not official IELTS scores, and no score is guaranteed.

£12 a month, renewing monthly until you cancel. No VAT is added. Cancel any time; Pro stays active until the end of the paid month, with no partial refunds. Outside the UK? You can pay in pounds (GBP) to avoid Stripe's conversion fee.

Pro payments are taken on Stripe's secure checkout page, so English Test Coach never sees your card number.

Questions about IELTS writing correction

Is AI IELTS writing correction accurate?

It gives a useful estimate, not an official score. In our own check against 27 official sample scripts, 24 estimates were within one band of the examiner's mark, but scripts marked 8 or above were usually scored too low. Use AI for regular practice and a human for a high-stakes judgement.

How much does human IELTS writing correction cost?

It is usually priced per essay. For example, on 13 October 2026 IELTS Online Tests charged $19.99 for each evaluation by a current or former examiner. Check whether a price covers one task or both before you pay.

How fast is human correction?

Usually one or two working days. IELTS Online Tests says it usually returns feedback within 24 hours and guarantees 48, excluding weekends; Love to Learn English returns essays within two working days.

Does English Test Coach offer human correction?

No. We offer an AI checker with evidence for each criterion, annotated sample answers and planning tools. If you need a human examiner's judgement, use a service like the ones on this page alongside your AI practice.
