What IELTS Writing band do I need?

The Writing band you need depends on your other three bands, because your overall band is the average of all four rounded to the nearest half band. To reach a target, the average only has to come within a quarter band of it: an average ending in .25 or .75 rounds up. For example, with Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5 and Speaking 6.5, you need Writing 7.0 for an overall 7.0.

Minimum Writing band for overall 7.0

7.0

With Writing 7.0, your overall band would be 7.0. With Writing 6.5, it would be 6.5.

A Writing band of about 7.0 usually means band 7 features in all four criteria, most of all in Task 2, which is worth twice as many marks as Task 1. See what each criterion needs.

The overall band uses the official rounding rule. The Writing band you get is set by examiners, so anything about Writing here is an estimate. Many universities and visa routes also set a minimum for each section.

Who this is for, and who it is not for

Useful if you

  • have a target overall band for a university, job or visa;
  • know, or can estimate, your Listening, Reading and Speaking bands;
  • want to decide how much of your preparation time to give to Writing.

Not suitable if you

  • need an official result or a guaranteed score: only an official IELTS test report gives an official band;
  • need to know whether you meet each section minimum: check your university, employer or visa route;
  • do not yet know your Writing level: write a timed response first.

Writing band needed: quick table

Only the total of your other three bands matters. Add your Listening, Reading and Speaking bands, find the total, and read across to your target.

Minimum Writing band needed for an overall 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5, by the total of the other three section bands
Listening + Reading + SpeakingOverall 6.5Overall 7.0Overall 7.5
18.07.09.0Not reachable
18.56.58.5Not reachable
19.06.08.0Not reachable
19.55.57.5Not reachable
20.05.07.09.0
20.54.56.58.5
21.04.06.08.0
21.53.55.57.5
22.03.05.07.0
22.52.54.56.5

“Not reachable” means even Writing 9.0 would not lift the average far enough. The IELTS band score calculator shows the full rounding for any four bands.

Worked example: overall 7.0

A learner needs an overall 7.0 and expects Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0 and Speaking 6.5. Those three add up to 21.0.

  • With Writing 6.0, the total is 27.0 and the average is 6.75. It ends in .75, so it rounds up to 7.0.
  • With Writing 5.5, the average is 6.625, which rounds to 6.5: short of the target.

So Writing 6.0 is the minimum for an overall 7.0. But if the university also asks for at least 6.5 in each section, Writing 6.0 is not enough, even though the overall band is.

How to get band 7 in IELTS Writing

Writing is marked on four criteria of equal weight, and Task 2 is worth twice as many marks as Task 1. A Writing band of 7 usually means band 7 features in all four. This is what typically changes from band 6, in our own words:

  • Task response: Keep one clear position from the introduction to the conclusion, and extend every main idea with a specific reason or example rather than a general statement. In Task 1, write a clear overview of the main trends or, in a letter, cover every bullet point fully.
  • Coherence and cohesion: Make the order of ideas easy to follow, give each paragraph one clear job, and link sentences by meaning, including reference words such as “this” and “these”, instead of stacking connectors.
  • Lexical resource: Use some less common words where they fit the topic precisely, with natural collocations and a suitable style. A few spelling slips are acceptable if they never blur the meaning.
  • Grammatical range and accuracy: Use a variety of complex sentences that you control well, so that many of your sentences have no errors at all.

Our plain-English guide to the Writing band descriptors compares bands 5 to 8 for each criterion. For a target of 6.5, band 6 features across the criteria with band 7 features in some is the usual picture.

Questions about the Writing band you need

Is band 7 a good IELTS score?

Band 7 is described as a good user on the IELTS band scale: operational command of English with occasional errors and misunderstandings. Whether it is good enough depends on your goal, so check the overall band and any section minimums your university, employer or visa route asks for.

How do I get band 7 in IELTS Writing?

A Writing band of 7 usually means meeting band 7 in all four criteria, especially in Task 2. Compared with band 6, that means a clear position with every main idea extended and supported, ideas that progress logically with natural linking, some less common vocabulary used precisely, and frequent error-free complex sentences. In Task 1, a clear overview of the main features is needed.

How is the IELTS overall band calculated?

Add your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Can a low Writing band be balanced by my other sections?

In the overall band, yes: each section counts equally, so a higher Listening or Reading band can make up for a lower Writing band. But many universities and visa routes also set a minimum band for each section, and a good overall band does not replace a section minimum.

How long does it take to improve my Writing by half a band?

There is no fixed time, and nobody can promise one. It depends on your starting point, which criterion is holding you back, and how often you write timed answers and act on feedback. Find the weakest criterion first, practise against it, and check a new response before you book or rebook a test.

How can I check my current Writing band?

Write a timed Task 1 or Task 2 response and use our free writing checker for an estimated band for each of the four criteria. It is an estimate, not an official result: only an official IELTS test report gives you an official band.

Is this an official IELTS tool?

No. English Test Coach is independent of IELTS, the British Council, IDP and Cambridge. The overall band uses the official rounding rule; anything about your Writing band is our estimate.
