Writing9 alternatives for IELTS writing practice
Start with what you need to replace: an automated report, a wider IELTS study platform or a place to plan and practise. These are different jobs, and the same tool may not suit all three.
Ownership disclosure: we make English Test Coach, one of the options below. This is our needs-based shortlist, not an independent ranking or a claim that our product is best. Public AI assessment on English Test Coach is currently paused.
For the detailed two-product feature and price breakdown, use English Test Coach vs Writing9. This page helps you choose among several different approaches.
If you are considering Grammarly for revising an IELTS draft, our Grammarly comparison explains its language suggestions and AI Grader, current access and the limits of converting a writing score into an IELTS band.
A shortlist by the job you need done
| Your immediate need | Option to inspect | Decisive check |
|---|---|---|
| Free automatic feedback for revising English | Cambridge Write & Improve | The free result is linked to the CEFR. IELTS Test Zone is a separate workbook offer; check its free tasks and subscription. |
| A first automated Task 2 report | Gradeful | Its stated free first report and Task 2 focus fit that specific trial; do not assume it covers Task 1. |
| Writing plus other IELTS skills | Engnovate | Check the monthly free evaluation limit, the format you need and the essay-publication notice. |
| Original examples, planning and free drafting | English Test Coach | Useful for self-directed practice now; it cannot currently supply a public AI assessment. |
These choices are based on the scope and access each service describes, not measured differences in scoring quality.
Cambridge Write & Improve: distinguish free revision feedback from IELTS practice
Write & Improve’s free service offers automatic feedback on writing and a result linked to the CEFR. Its homepage says you can use the free tool without registering, while a profile saves your work and opens more tasks. The free page describes word- and sentence-level feedback, revisions and progress tracking. Sources: Write & Improve access and free feedback features.
This is a useful option to inspect when your immediate aim is to revise English writing with automatic feedback. A CEFR-linked result is not an IELTS Writing band. If your aim is exam-specific practice, inspect the separate Write & Improve +Test Zone IELTS offer.
The Test Zone page currently lists an Academic workbook with 60 tasks at £4.50 per month and a General Training workbook with 40 tasks at £4.50 per month. It advertises 10 free Academic tasks and 2 free General Training tasks, with unlimited use under a monthly subscription. These are separately listed workbook offers; do not assume that one price includes both.
The provider describes timed exam practice and task-level band feedback. That practice feedback is not an official IELTS test result. We read the public offer but did not create a profile, use a free task, subscribe or compare scores with an examiner. Check the selected workbook, current trial conditions and final payment terms before choosing paid access.
For a focused study session, identify the sentence or paragraph you want to improve, inspect the feedback and explain each revision yourself. Our sentence-repair examples can help you check that a grammatical change still preserves your intended meaning.
Gradeful: inspect it for a first Task 2 report
Gradeful’s current homepage describes IELTS Task 2 grading with criterion feedback and sentence-level revisions. It advertises one full report without an account or card, followed by unlimited essays at $14.99 per month or $69 per year. Its listed writing scope is Task 2.
This is a candidate when your immediate question is whether an automated essay report gives you actionable revisions. If you need a letter or visual report assessed, establish support for that format before choosing it. We have not submitted an essay, tested the allowance or compared its marks with an examiner.
Engnovate: check the format, source and publication setting
Public checker pages, plans and FAQ checked 3 October 2026.
Engnovate has separate checkers for Academic Task 1 reports, General Training letters and Task 2 essays, alongside speaking tools, courses and wider IELTS practice. Its Free plan lists two writing evaluations per month for Task 1 and Task 2; Premium lists unlimited writing evaluations. The public form being visible does not establish that an evaluation can be completed without signing in. We did not submit a response or test that access boundary.
For Academic Task 1, keep the source visual with the report
The Academic report checker has separate question, topic-image and report inputs. Its image guidance asks for a clear, upright view of the source. A report alone cannot show whether its comparisons match the original chart. Keep category labels, dates and units readable; a cropped image that loses the scale or legend removes information needed to interpret your answer.
For example, our original evening-class chart describes registrations in one year. A sentence about rising popularity would introduce a time trend that the source does not provide. Study the complete static-comparison report or the worked category comparisons before checking your own report. This is our teaching example, not output from Engnovate or a scoring experiment.
Read the publication notice for every writing format
The report checker, letter checker and essay checker each warn that checked responses may become public and direct users to Premium for private submissions. The plans page also says Premium checked answers will not be published. Read the current notice for the format you use, especially before sending a letter containing real contact details or an essay containing personal information.
The public checker displays an overall band and four criterion results, but its disclaimer describes the score as a guide rather than an official result. We inspected the empty interface, not a completed assessment. Its reported accuracy claims have not been independently verified here. Use any returned comments to identify a specific revision, then check it against the question and source; a displayed number alone does not explain what to change.
Separate the free allowance from fixed-duration paid access
On the check date, the plan selector showed promotional one-time payments of $11.97 for one month, $25.97 for three months, $44.97 for six months and $61.97 for twelve months. Its payment FAQ describes fixed-duration access without automatic renewal and a code activated on the account. Promotions can change; verify the currency, current total, activation and purchase terms before paying.
A broader platform can suit a routine that moves between skills. Decide which writing format, feedback and publication setting you need before choosing paid access. If you want to prepare the report first, our free workspace opens with the original chart and question selected; public AI marking remains paused.
English Test Coach: use it for guided practice without payment
Our current strength is a connected preparation journey: original question, planning ideas, vocabulary, writing workspace, annotated answer and a relevant lesson. You can use the public resources and workspace without an account.
The workspace includes a planner, timer, word count, device backup, draft download and on-device spelling review. An account supports private cross-device writing; guest device storage alone does not. Our help page explains the difference.
Current limitation: public AI feedback is paused for every account and paid checkout is closed. The available rule-based demo is not AI marking or an official score. If an automated assessment is essential to your next session, this is not a replacement for that part of Writing9’s service. See current free use and plans.
Make the choice with one learning objective
- Name the task. A Task 2 opinion essay, an Academic chart and a General Training complaint letter need different coverage. Match the provider to the format first.
- Name the output you need. “I need a band estimate” is different from “I need to explain one reason clearly”. A planner, annotated example or focused lesson may address the second need before you buy a report.
- Check the real access boundary. Distinguish a free editor, a fixed example report, a free report on your own work and a recurring allowance. Also check whether the price buys one month of access or renews automatically.
- Read how your submission is used. Check the provider’s publication/storage notice before sending personal or confidential details. Use an original practice response rather than a document containing real identifiers.
- Judge the usefulness of a revision. Does a comment connect to the question and a specific sentence? Can you explain the change and apply it to a new paragraph? A higher displayed band alone does not demonstrate that learning.
You do not have to replace every resource when changing tools. Keep a useful study guide and use another service for an assessment if that combination meets your needs.
